Programmes and learning

Te Whāriki

Rutherford Preschool embraces a learning programme based on Te Whāriki, the New Zealand early childhood curriculum. This approach emphasises the learning partnership between kaiako/teachers, tamariki/children, whānau, the community, and the environment. We honour and value the bi-cultural heritage of Aotearoa and aspire to weave te reo and te ao Māori into our daily practices.

Primary caregiving system

We use the primary caregiving system where each pēpē/infant and tamariki is allocated to a specific kaiako/teacher when they start. The philosophy is that each tamariki can form a positive relationship and attachment with their primary caregiver who acts as their safe base while they transition into their new environment. As each tamariki becomes more confident and gains a sense of belonging in their new environment, they start to form relationships and attachments with the other kaiako in the room.

Child-initiated play programme

We promote a child-initiated play programme based on the unique needs and interests of tamariki. This approach fosters the child’s holistic development (physical, emotional, intellectual, social, cultural and spiritual) within the early childhood setting and the wider context of the child’s world. Tamariki have the freedom to explore the environment in their own time and at their own pace with qualified and dedicated kaiako/teachers who work alongside and support them with their interests and next stage of learning.

Emergent curriculum

Using the emergent curriculum, our kaiako/teachers observe, document, and communicate the individual interests and passions of tamariki to plan their learning programme. Each child’s programme, stories and learning is shared with parents via Educa, a secure online platform. We acknowledge whānau and community as an integral part of our curriculum and strongly encourage and support parent/caregiver and centre reciprocal relationships. We offer both formal and informal opportunities for parents to be involved in their child’s education. We love to celebrate the diverse cultures that make up our centre and value the kete of knowledge that they bring to share with us.

Healthy Heart Programme

We are involved in the Healthy Heart Programme with the NZ Heart Foundation, promoting healthy eating and active movement with our kaiako, tamariki and whānau. We have our own vegetable garden and create delicious food with our tamariki from the produce.

Sustainability

We provide sustainable practices within our centre to look after our environment and promote the wellbeing of all. Sustainable practices include promoting the use of recycled materials, natural resources, reducing plastic, using more natural-based cleaners/products, conserving water, growing vegetables and maintaining a worm-farm. We also support the use of reusable nappies.
